Madagascar 2: Escape Africa!

Brief Synopsis: Madagascar 2 follows the further adventures of four animals; Marty a zebra (Chris Rock), Alex a lion (Ben Stiller), Gloria a hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman (David Schwimmer) a giraffe, all of whom were stranded on the island of Madagascar off the coast of the African continent in the previous movie. After a few months of “vacation” the four pals have decided they now wish to return to New York and go “home.” Using the “repaired” remains of a crashed aircraft the pals, along with the beloved penguins as the crew, they set a course for home.

Personal review: I love Madagascar, and Madagascar 2 I feel lives up well to the foundation set forth by the first movie. There was never a dull moment as even when advancing the plot through little more than dialogue, the background or characters has at least something going on. This movie introduces several new characters including; Zuba Alex’s father and alpha male of the pride (voiced by the late, great Bernie Mac), Makunga (Alec Baldwin) Zuba’s rival for alpha male of the pride and the movie’s antagonist and Moto Moto (Will i Am) a male hippo who catches Gloria’s eye. My favorite of the new characters is absolutely the smooth talking hippo Moto Moto. We also see the return of other character like my personal favorite King Julien, along with Julien’s right hand primate Maurice, Mort, Nana the granny who kicked Alex but in the first movie along with of course the penguins; Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Mason. I think the introduction of a real root in the wild for one of the characters was a nice, if expected touch and the necessary inclusion of a love subplot was expected although the twist put on it was nice. The story moves along well and has quite a plethora of funny scenes.

Favorite scenes: King Julien convincing the others that his sacrifice plan will work, Alex using “fight” dancing in a real fight, the entire plane crash scene, pretty much any other King Julien scene.

Overall I give this movie a 8 of 10, this is a great movie for kids and adults, and is incredibly enjoyable.
